DAY 2

    FLORENCE

There are no activities planned today. Head out to explore the wonderful city of Florence, described as an open air museum, the city is noted for its marvelous art, heritage and architecture all along its narrow cobbled streets, making it a cinematic feast of elegant 15th-16th century palazzi. Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, Raphael, Machiavelli and Michelangelo all lived in Florence at the height of their creative reign and have left their marks on the city.

We recommend visiting the famous Duomo & Piazza della Signoria, where key landmarks and awe-inspiring museums, churches and palaces dot the square: Galleria degli Uffizi, Palazzo Vecchio, The Duomo, Cupola del Brunelleschi, Museo dell’Opera del Duomo…

Florence itself is small and best navigated on foot where major sights are within walking distance. From the Duomo, head to cross the river Arno and visit the Boboli Gardens, for a stroll through the stunning grounds on a sunny afternoon. Or perhaps beyond the tourist-swarmed Ponte Vecchio, head to Piazzale Michelangelo for a stunning view of the city.

In San Lorenzo & San Marco, top choice museums are Museo di San Marco, or the Galleria dell’Accademia. A queue marks the door to this gallery, built to house Michelangelo’s David (1504), one of the most iconic works of Renaissance sculpture, and a Florentine symbol of power, liberty and civic pride. A youthful human beauty masterpiece of line and form.

Food lovers are spoilt for choice in Florence. Try some of the local cuisine which is known for its simplicity, yet delicate flavours. It is a gourmet paradise where eating and drinking exceedingly well is mandatory.

The grandeur of this ancient, Maritime Republic is reflected in Piazza dei Miracoli, where the tower is enveloped by the Cathedral, Baptistry and Monumental Cemetery.

Next stop is Lucca, with its wealth of history, still found when visiting the ruins of its Roman Amphitheater, the Guinigi Tower and a walk on the walls that once protected it from outside invasion. An enemy to Florence until 1328 and temporary site of exile to Dante, this charming town provides an enchanting backdrop to an afternoon walk or a delicious local lunch.
