DAY 3

    MEKNES

Today enjoy a day trip to Fes, the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco; vibrant, fascinating and slightly overwhelming. The sound of the market, the smells of the spices and the colours of the tapestry, together igniting all your senses. Meet our local guide in the morning and head to this well-preserved, huge medieval old city, with its sprawling and twisting labyrinthine alleys, called Fes el-Bali and often dubbed the mother of all medinas.

The city has been inhabited since the medieval times when it was one of the world’s great centres of education and culture, both Islamic and Jewish. Its religious institutions, mosques and libraries are legendary. Filled with historic khans, medresses and dye-pits, stalls loaded with fruits, herbs and soups, and where the squawk of chickens, scents of spice and sounds of hammering of copper fills the air, it’s not hard to feel as if time has stopped, and you imagine yourself back in the Middle Ages. Spend the day exploring the old city, visiting, Mederassa Bou Inania, the tanneries and the splendid Funduk Nejjarine, a beautifully restored 18th century inn. Fes’ energies stem from all the lives that roamed its labyrinth for centuries, with a rich and a heavy presence that enchants visitors and enhances their time there.

From Fes, get the car back to return to your riad in the late afternoon. The evening time is at leisure back in Meknes.

Unapologetically real in its authenticity & contrasts, Marrakech could be described as chaotic and rugged with its cacophony of smells and sounds, yet it is fully grounded in its own complex & insular reality for the people who have dwelled in and out of its walls for hundreds of years…
